To think about
Check the parents hunting qualifications carefully. If the bitch has previous litters, check how the puppies turned out to be. If you can’t see one of the parent dogs hunting ‘live’ then ask for references from hunters who have seen them in action. The more information you get the easier it is to get an opinion. Ask also what imperfections and disadvantages the dogs have. Because belive me, even the worlds greatest dog has its bad sides.
A good breeder can present results from his breeding in the form of results from hunting trials, exhibition shows, and present statistics of dogs that have obtained prizes.
To choose breeder
You should also choose a breeder that suits you. The importance that you feel confidence in each other can not be emphasized enough. Dog breeding and dog owning is ruled by a big set of rules and regulations so you should feel that you turn to a competent and confident-inspiring person.
A concious responsible breeder:
- Knows about the advantages and disadvantages of the race.
- Understands what is means to be a breeder.
- Follows the national Kennel Organisations fundamental rules.
To choose puppy
When you have chosen a breeder that you are confident in it is a good idea to use him/her when choosing a puppy. The breeder follows the puppies, sees the develompment and has a certain idea of their personalities. Often the breeder see to match the puppies to the buyers qualifications and goals. It is important that you are honest when describing your condition and what you can offer your puppy.
Bitch or male
There is a saying, ”The hunter has male dogs and the breeder has bitches” which I thought about for a while. But after a couple of hunting seasons I understood the advantage in having a male that is not affected by hormone cycles in the same way a bitch is. But still, I myself choose bitches.
