Before buying
Before you even consider buying a hunting dig you should ask yourself some fundamental questions.
Who am I and what can I offer my dog?
- Do I really need a hunting dog?
- Does the whole family agree with getting a dog?
- Do I have the conditions to raise a hunting dog?
- Can I afford having a dog?
- Do I understand what it means to have a dog for 10-12 years?
You should have in mind that even though you buy a hunting dog it is only going to hunt for a fraction of the total time. 90 % of the time the dog will be in our everyday life not hunting. If there is any hesitation you are better to wait until the conditions are right. After all, we want to offer the dog the good and safe life it is entitled to.
Is the hunting breed right for my needs?
You should bare in mind what the dog is bred for, if breed standard suits for the hunting form you’re about to practice then you’re on to a good thing. Let the choice of breed and puppy take the time it needs. Form your own opinion and knowledge by going to hunting trials, visit different breeders, see an exhibition, try to see adult dogs working in real situations and read dog literature. Don’t rush and you will increase your chances to find exactly what you’re looking for.
