Once the hunting trials were completed in the autumn I have been eagerly waiting for the drive hunting with dogs to begin. Here in Slovakia they don’t start until in November. So most of my hunting colleagues begin a month earlier. So in October I was told one hunting story after another about how the dogs worked. You could actually hear in their detailed descriptions that the time of the dog handlers was here. Their joy could not be mistaken, it is simply Prime time. Sure, I was thrilled by all the stories but it was slightly frustrating at the same time, I wanted to be a part of the stories as well!

It has been said, and can be said again, no hunting is as fun as with gundogs. Not least with your own ones. So therefore, as the driven season has started in Swedend, I wish all hunters a succesful and adventurous season. I have been a bit spoiled with having started down in Germany. Mollys first hunt was a few weeks ago in one of northern Germany, many corn fields. If there is something that is difficult and complicated it has to be hunting in corn fields: the visibility is zero to a few meters, so to get an actual chance to shoot is really low. But it is exciting and more fun when you succeeds.

We were with Ingemar Tykessson for track training with Nelly, Molly and Dexter. Three dogs with a completely different way of working so the challenge was to read each one properly. As an example, Nelly had a work rate at 600 meters in 22 minutes while Ingemars fine wirehaired went in a third of the time. We are all different …
