First driven hunt season 2011/2012

So the weekend’s escapades has ended. It was of course driven hunt on the menu. We are in southern Scania, where hunting mentor Timo arranges a small hunt. This morning its a little chilly and the dew lies on the grass. The mist is so strong that the sun that can be glimpsed thru it looks like a moon. We can absolutely expect a great day. Gathering at nine o’clock and with perfect weather. A bit too good weather in order to feel that there is hunting going on. But would the hunt be unsuccessful then at least we have been lucky with the weather. After briefing and instructions on who should do what and who should go where, we get in the the cars and drive to the ground.

First battue is dedicated to Dragan to give my trained Dexter the chance. The battue is a forest enclosure, that we believe in. Dexter really has to work to cover up all the ground as the alone dog. After a while you hear the first barks. He finds a fallow dear but unfortunately it disappear in the woods. Furthermore we get a glimpse of two wild boars that sneaks away out of reach. Well, a good first release.

Second battue is assigned me and Timo. I take Nelly and Timo his DD’s Vilma and Ville. This part, again we believe much of as it lies next to one of our “hottest” areas. It starts well and all the dogs finds game and we have both wild boar and deer on the run. But again they slip away and we just have to rethink about our tactics during the coffee break.

Coffee break consists little of a mixed bag. Everything from grilled sausages, pesto salad, noodles, etc. But the best part was, however, Kajsa and Maltes freshly baked buns with milk. Can it get any better?!? :)

In the third battue hell breaks loose. Timo goes again with Vilma and Ville in what we call the larch enclosure. One of my favorite battues. But now it is about to go really wrong. Ville gets into a fight with a boar who gives him a proper beating. Despite this, he gets out the boar and Joakim is not late with his gun and he informs that there is a hit and boar seems to have gone a bit into a thickening of pine trees. Timo gets a chance on a fallow deer calf and Dragan gets a young wild boar. Adam takes his young dog Se7en to go on the track after the wild boar. I’ll go with him as backup if needed. It takes just a few meters after the release before Se7en marks the wild boar by barking. We walk on in the thickening see the boar lying. However, it is not dead and its tries to do one last attempt. Adam is quick with his gun and so now we just need to take in all the game. The joy is however a little bit damp when we have a look at Ville who looks like he had gone a great boxing match and is all sore and wobbly. It’s really lucky that we have two vets with us who evaluate the situation. Fortunately, no serious / life threatening injuries. However, we have a suspected fracture of his left front paw.

After the game has been taken care off we go for the last battue of the day. Time for Kjell and his wachtelhounds. This battue is always fun but we soon realize see how difficult it is due to the high vegetation. The dogs have contact several times but the game is mostly walking around and hiding. A fallow deer comes out to Joakim who takes care of the situation well. After a while the heat plays out its role and we change dogs. Now it’s me again with Nelly and Diva. Now its Diva who pulls the heavy load. I am reminded why I have German hunting terriers. Now, I’m no breed fascist in any way. But there is something special about their effectiveness when it comes to them working with the wild boars, and gets them moving. Nelly is working fine, and she finds a couple of wild boars, which are hiding in the raspberry bushes. She is really pointing and marking them. I sneak up to try getting a better view. Diva comes so I might as well give Nelly the avance command as Diva will guaranteed put them on motion. Said and done, they flush them with Nelly and Diva at their heels. At the same time I see the second boar in the same place trying to trip away. I see a gap, but make a bad hit it in back, but enough making enough damage so and I can go up and finish it all. Now we take in Dragan and Dexter again for reinforcement. So for continuing 40 minutes we have a lot of game on their feet that are now choosing to leave battue although we most probably did not get out all game. It’s that dense.
But six game corresponding to 6 rifles is a really good result!

We thank you for a wonderful fine hunting this time.
