After search with Dexter
December 24th, 2010
Yesterday it was time for Blücher II aus den Hühnermoor aka “Dexter” to make his first sharp tracking. Me myself thought it was a pure dead search but boy was I wrong. It was I who had shot at a wild boar who made a mock attack on Peggy (my new DD) and I thought I saw a clear hit. The wild boars trotted off calmly and it sounded like they stood a little further in the battue. So I waited a while to then go back to the car, modifying my equipment and switch to Dexter.
There was plenty of blood and found a clear piece of liver. Dexter followed at times in the track core, but often a bit to the left of the track. Suddenly he stands firm. Hmm, the blood is on the right and he stands and points to the left. I try to look around a bit cautious in case the pig made a turn back. But no. He resolves the pointing him self and it turns out to be a recent resting place at uprooted trees that he was a bit suspicious of. Well, we track one hundred meters more and now Dexter seem to be of the track completely. The track angles a bit to the right and he goes straight. Is he wanting to make a short cut? Is he following fresh tracks instead? It is clearly possible that here are healthy pigs nearby. I command him to sit (with some effort) from a distance because I want to inspect the situation. So I go over and look if the track continues further on where he wants to go. It does not. I hit a turn back to see if I can see if the track will continue out to me where it bent. It does not.
Then I see it. Blood lead into a bunker of weeds and bushes and I’m pretty sure I have the wildboar in there. I call for Dexter who comes just by the bunker (of course) and he marks it directly. Mmhmm, probably you might find it there. Calling Dexter to me because I need to remove his track line. Inspecting a bit more before I let him off. He goes straight on and stands on the bunker. He starts barking and out comes the wild boar. The first shot goes off, but the wild boar continues with Dexter barking behind. Fortunately it angles giving me another chance and it all ends. Glad it did not need to be more dramatic at his first sharp tracking.

It turns out that my first shots hit the throat and went through the whole body, damaged liver and damaged the hindlimb.
You can watch the movie here.
Now it is Christmas break for two days
Merry Christmas to you!
